Cabaret In Blue

AXIS Arts will be holding a workshop reading and feedback session for “Cabaret In Blue”, the newest piece by Dante Minghella and a future fully-produced project for the company.

Set in London during the height of World War 2, Cabaret follows five dysfunctional socialites over the course of one abandoned evening out on the town. As the fragile deceits and truces between them start to crumble in a haze of alcohol, sex and Catholicism, they confront their desires, their inadequacies and each other.

Dante Minghella is a superb writer who’s already had work performed at the Soho, and is highly enthusiastic about AXIS Arts critiquing and, later, performing this five-hander five-act piece. Whilst participation in this workshop read doesn’t in any way guarantee casting in the production next year, we will obviously take what we’ve seen into account.

Date and location will be worked out with the group when we have our participants, but the commitment is likely to be around three hours.

For this Lab, we’re looking for ten actors (two for each role). Artists participating in the read will have a number of different responsibilities:

* Reading roughly half of the script for the character they’re assigned

* Observing with audience/critical eyes & ears when their counterpart is reading the character

* Giving critical feedback at the end of the reading, along with suggestions for improvement and insight on what they liked

This is for actors who have a real interest in being involved in the development of new writing; it’s not simply a script read. Your thoughts and opinions afterwards are just as important as your reading abilities, and honest feedback will be gratefully received. Dante will be in attendance, and is genuinely keen to hear the actors’ views. This is a phenomenal opportunity to forge a relationship with an up-and-coming writer with a lot of talent and superb connections to the industry.

Selected actors will be required to read the script before attending.

The roles up for grabs are:

CHRISTIAN - Late 20’s, dashing & charismatic & almost totally amoral

ANDREW - Early 20’s, reserved and good-natured. At war with himself over his own homosexual desires

ALFONSO - Early 30’s, second-generation Italian immigrant, Andrew’s lover. A working man with life experience

NORMA - Early 20’s, Christian’s fiance. English Rose type, firm believer in the traditional place of women and devoted to Christian

SYLVIE - Mid 20’s, Andrew’s girlfriend. Progressive and outspoken, sarcastic but with deep vulnerability
